What is an XML sitemap?

An XML sitemap is a file, usually at /sitemap.xml, that lists the URLs of a site you want search engines to know about. Crawlers still find pages through links; the sitemap makes sure none are missed, especially new pages and ones few links point to.

A sitemap holds up to 50,000 URLs. Point to it from robots.txt with a Sitemap: line and submit it in Google Search Console so you can see how many of its URLs are indexed.

Questions

Is this sitemap generator free?

Yes. The preview shows the first 25 URLs as XML; a free account gives the full sitemap.xml download, up to 5,000 URLs.

Where do I put sitemap.xml?

In your site’s root, so it is served at https://yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml, and reference it in robots.txt.

Does it include lastmod dates?

No. A lastmod is only useful when it is accurate, so the generated file lists URLs only; add dates from your CMS if you have them.

How often should I regenerate it?

Whenever you add or remove pages. Most CMSs can also generate one automatically.
