Where they really differ
Jina Reader is about as simple as web-to-markdown gets: put r.jina.ai/ in front of a URL and you get the page back as markdown, with a headless browser doing the rendering. It handles PDFs too, and its rate limits are generous: 500 requests a minute on a free key.
It works one URL per request. Following links across a site, deduplicating, storing pages and keeping them fresh is your build. Jina sells embeddings, reranking and segmentation as separate APIs, so you can assemble a pipeline, but you assemble it.
Jina AI has been part of Elastic since October 2025, and commercial licensing of its ReaderLM models now goes through Elastic. SarvCrawl is the assembled version: crawl, parse, chunk, embed and search behind one key.
Using both
Use Jina Reader for one-off pages inside a prompt, and SarvCrawl for the corpora an assistant answers from every day.
SarvCrawl vs Jina Reader: questions
Is SarvCrawl a Jina Reader alternative?
If you need more than one page at a time, yes. SarvCrawl crawls whole sites and stores everything in a searchable knowledge base. For a single URL inside a prompt, Jina Reader is simpler.
Does Jina Reader crawl whole websites?
Reader converts one URL per request. Crawling a site means calling it for each page and managing the links yourself.
Who owns Jina AI?
Elastic completed its acquisition of Jina AI on 9 October 2025.
How does pricing compare?
Both bill tokens. Jina gives 10 million free tokens, then charges from $0.05 per million. SarvCrawl gives 1 billion free tokens, covering parsing, chunking and embedding.
