The short version
- Choose Crawl4AI if you want full control in Python, no marginal cost, and you are happy to operate a browser pool.
- Choose SarvCrawl if you want crawling, document parsing, chunking, embeddings and search without operating any of it.

Where they really differ
Crawl4AI is an open-source Python crawler with more than 78,000 GitHub stars: self-hosted, producing LLM-ready markdown, with schema-based extraction and pluggable LLM providers. For cost-sensitive or heavily customised pipelines it is a genuinely good answer.
Its cost is the one every self-hosted crawler has: you operate a browser pool, which is the memory-hungry, flaky part of any crawler, and you are on your own against anti-bot.
SarvCrawl is open source too — Apache-2.0 with an AGPL-3.0 engine — but most teams use it hosted, so the browser pool, queue, OCR and index are someone else's pager.
Using both
Prototype locally with Crawl4AI, and move the corpus you want searchable into a SarvCrawl knowledge base when it needs to be shared, refreshed and queried by an app.
SarvCrawl vs Crawl4AI: questions
Is SarvCrawl a Crawl4AI alternative?
Yes, if you would rather not operate the crawler yourself, or you need document parsing, embeddings and search alongside crawling.
Is Crawl4AI free?
The licence is free. Running it is not: the browser pool, retries and storage are a permanent operational commitment.
Is SarvCrawl open source?
The pipeline, SDKs, CLI, MCP server and console are Apache-2.0 and the engine is AGPL-3.0. The search service is hosted and not part of the open-source release.
Which is better for RAG?
Crawl4AI gives you markdown to feed your own RAG stack. SarvCrawl gives you the stack: chunked, embedded content with keyword and hybrid search on paid plans.
